Safer Driving in Winter

Heavy fog, rain or icy conditions can make driving on New Zealand roads in winter especially challenging.

Here’s some factors to consider for safer winter driving*:

• Check weather and road conditions before your trip and visit the NZTA Journey Planner for latest updates, incidents and road closures: Journey planner | NZTA Journey Planner

• Ensure your tyres, windscreen wipers and lights are in good condition, with washer fluids topped up

• Keep windows and mirrors clean to improve visibility when driving in rainy, snowy or foggy conditions - turn demister on or open windows to prevent them fogging up

• Drive slower than usual - it only takes a split second to lose control in wet or icy conditions

• Use headlights when driving in heavy rain, fog or snow – dipping your headlights when driving in fog will make it easier to see

• Avoid sudden braking or turning movements that could cause you to skid - accelerate slowly and brake gently

• Reduce speed and increase your following distance using the four-second rule when driving on wet or icy roads which can be very slippery

Remember that temporary speed limits, lane closures and traffic management measures are in place to protect road users, pedestrians and the people working on or alongside the road. Slow down, stay patient and follow all instructions.

A little extra care and planning can make winter driving safer and less stressful for everyone.
