Driving this Summer?

Summer holidays in New Zealand often mean long drives, busy highways and vehicles packed with people, luggage and gear. Taking the time to properly prepare before you set off, is one of the easiest ways to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Whether you’re heading away for a well-earned break or keeping your business fleet moving through the holiday rush, a few simple safety habits can make all the difference.

Make Sure Your Vehicle is Roadworthy

Before getting behind the wheel, it’s essential to ensure your vehicle is safe and ready for the journey. Check all key fluid levels, ensure your tyres are properly inflated, and take a moment to assess the overall condition of the vehicle.

Hot weather and long drives can amplify mechanical issues, so a quick pre-trip check can help prevent breakdowns and delays.  Ensure the vehicle has a current WOF, Registration and if it’s a diesel, PHEV, or EV vehicle ensure it has enough Road User Charges for the trip.

Know Your Limits -Towing and Loading

If you’re towing a trailer, caravan or boat, or loading up the car with holiday gear, always adhere to your vehicle’s recommended maximum towing and load capacities. Exceeding these limits affects stability, braking, and overall handling, especially on steep or winding summer roads. Secure everything safely to maintain balance and avoid dangerous shifting during travel.

Stay Focused: Managing Fatigue and Distraction

Long summer drives can be tiring, especially in warm conditions or heavy traffic. Fatigue is a major contributor to serious crashes in New Zealand.

To stay alert:

• Rest well the night before travelling

• Take breaks every two hours

• Share the driving where possible

• Stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals

• Keep your phone out of reach or set it to driving mode

If you begin to feel drowsy - yawning, drifting in your lane, difficulty concentrating - it’s time to stop. No destination is worth the risk of pushing on tired.

Sober is Safer

Summer is a season of social gatherings, barbecues and celebrations, but drinking and driving remains one of the deadliest risks on New Zealand roads.

Plan ahead by:

• Assigning a sober driver

• Using taxis or rideshare services

• Staying overnight if needed

Even small amounts of alcohol can impact reaction time, judgement and coordination. If you plan to drink, plan not to drive.

Plan Your Route - And an Alternative

Holiday routes can quickly become congested, especially around major highways, popular beaches and tourist towns. Unexpected delays, weather events and roadworks are also common during summer.

Before travelling:

• Check NZTA for traffic updates

• Plan alternative routes in case of closures or heavy congestion

• Identify rest areas along the way

• Consider travelling early in the morning or later in the day

Having flexibility in your journey reduces frustration and helps you stay focused and calm.

Arrive Safe and Enjoy Your Journey

Have a safe and happy holidays – with a little preparation, awareness and patience, you can enjoy a smooth, stress-free trip and make the most of New Zealand’s incredible summer.
