Autumn in New Zealand brings cooler temperatures, shorter daylight hours, and often wet or windy roads. Fallen leaves can make surfaces slippery and early morning fog can reduce visibility.

Here’s some tips for safer driving in Autumn:*

Before you hit the road:

•     Do a quick safety check on tyres, brakes, suspension, lights and restraints (seatbelts, airbag, head restraints and kids car seats)

•     Check tyre pressure – recommended pressure for your vehicle can be found on the placard/sticker inside the driver’s door or vehicle handboo - correctly inflated tyres will also improve fuel economy

•     Check that headlights, indicators and brake lights are all working

•     Check windscreen for chips or cracks, as vibrations from bumpy roads can quickly worsen damage

•     Check fluid levels - oil, coolant and windscreen washer fluids

•     Keep your vehicle away from salt water as this can cause lasting damage

•     Ensure your WOF and Registration labels are current and clearly displayed

•     If you’re driving a diesel, EV or PHEV - check that Road User Charges (RUCs) are up to date and your label is clearly displayed

Plan your journey:

•    Before you head off - check the NZTA Journey Planner for information about your trip - hazards, road works, closures along with suggested routes to avoid them

•    Factor in time for regular breaks to help with fatigue on long drives

On the road:

•     Maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles when driving

•     Stay patient when driving behind slow-moving vehicles/boat trailers - only overtake in passing lanes or when you’re sure it’s safe

•     Drive to the road conditions and always within the speed limit

•     Stay alert and be prepared to adapt to changing conditions

These ideas are a good reminder that doing a bit of prep before you travel can make for a more comfortable and hassle-free journey this season.
